Craig & Herm were treated to a wonderful start to their morning with a fresh, wet snowfall. Not only did it begin our day, but it fell the entire time we were on the water too!

We launched in a mini blizzard and ran to our first spot in very little visibility. With snow all over the carpet in the boat, we also had to move carefully while fishing. I really didn’t expect a banner day, but figured we’d see a few more giants! I was right, but not from our starting location. We had to make several adjustments in order to finally get bit.

One of the moves had us tucked slightly out of the wind on the inside of a current break and it was here that the big ones came out to play. Craig started out with a couple of small bass and one nice walleye that would be going home with him tonight. A few minutes later on consecutive casts, three giants came aboard. One of the fish was by far, definitely the largest of the season! A few more bites were also had afterwards, but all those fish were missed.

We made several moves throughout the day and fished various depths in order to catch more fish. It wasn’t great, but at least some fish were willing to bite!

With the conditions less than perfect, I knew it was only a matter of time before we called the day. By 1:00 we packed it up and headed back to the ramp to take out. Of course, the skies were clearing now and the sun was trying to pop out from behind all the clouds. The snow had also stopped, but the winds were picking up and it was time to go.

It’s always tough at this time of year and Mother Nature tends to take control, one way or another! The last couple of days yielded some really nice fish but they didn’t come easy. Hopefully the next few weeks won’t shut me down completely because I have bookings until the end of the month. I already had to cancel for Friday due to high winds and extreme cold and the weekend isn’t looking good either. I may also have to reschedule the people there too! Crossing my fingers and toes that I can make it to the end of the season, comfortably!

Cold Weather Footballs

Craig & Herm were back for their annual fall fishing trip, for smallies today. They would be with me for a couple of days, looking for a few giants and I aimed to make it happen!

We hooked up early and headed to the water in hopes of some great fishing. Although we launched in clear cold weather, our run to the first spot had us in a snow squall! It even lasted for a little while giving Herm his first fish in the white stuff! Eventually the clouds blew through and so did these conditions, but the wind actually increased. It was going to be a blustery day!

With only a few fish to show for their efforts at our first stop, I decided to try a little shallower to see if anything was going on there. Apparently it was the right decision as Craig nailed back to back giants! His two fish were the reason why they always come back in the fall. Herm had the next two fish but only managed to get one into the boat as the other unfortunately came off on the jump. Too bad this was all they wrote for the area and I made another move in hopes of better numbers!

Our next spot had them throwing different baits and several other fish were hooked, with about half coming into the boat. They may have been smaller but at this time of the year, every fish is welcomed.

We hopped all over today, stopping on several productive areas and both Herm & Craig managed to land a bunch more fish. Both shallow & deep patterns were working but not for great numbers. The average size was big but I would have liked to see a few more fish!

With the strong north westerly today, the electric motor fought both the current and the winds and eventually the batteries just gave out. I still had some power but not the strength I needed to fight the conditions. I had no other choice but to use the small engine as well as the electric in order to continue the day. Fortunately I have the means to get the job done and we carried out the day successfully!

With daylight savings time upon us now, I was scheduled to leave earlier and hit one last area before calling it a day. Both Herm & Craig managed a couple more quality fish here, before we were done. We packed it up and headed back to take out.

Although the conditions may not have been ideal today, there were still some great fish landed. We will be back again tomorrow and with any luck, they will have another day filled with giant football sized smallies once again. I’m just crossing my fingers for decent weather and not the heavy precipitation that is forecasted. With these temps it may even snow, but hopefully not!

Brutal Conditions Again

Not much to report about today other than it was garbage! What was supposed to be a double trip day turned out to be a morning trip only, as I cancelled the afternoon clients! Big winds equal big waves and the water still hasn’t cleared up from all the rain and 100km winds from a couple of days ago. Oh the fish were still in the right areas but getting them to bite and slowing down enough for them to see, wasn’t easy!

Jean and his friend Rafa booked this morning and were completely new to fishing. I had thought that I would get them into a decent trolling bite but even at extremely slow speeds, the fish never ate. It wasn’t until we went down and drop shotted that they were able to finally get a bite. The winds were pushing us so fast that I had to slow down the drift with the electric motor. This also caused water to roll over the bow at times and made standing up front next to impossible for a newbie!

Despite fishing several areas, we did give it our best shot and managed to avoid the skunk. By 11:30 we were done and it couldn’t come fast enough for me! We ran back to the ramp in big waves that rolled 3 & 4 footers, crossways! The best part of the day was that I actually got my trailer lights fixed, thanks to Don! It turned out to only be a fuse making everything a quick fix! Now I can finally travel in the dark again!

The Day After The Storm

Tino was back out with me again today and looking for something big. He was definitely about to get his wish as we were heading to the land of the giants!

When we arrived I was a bit nervous of the water color from the torrential rains and yesterday’s wind. Instead of being crystal clear, it was like mud. This would surely have an effect on the bite! Along with the conditions, we also had plenty of company as it was the weekend and there were lots of boats all around. It definitely wasn’t like the last time out!

The fishing was slow and we really had to keep the presentations in the right areas for a long time in order to get bit. Some decent bass were landed but I wasn’t satisfied with the numbers or even the size. I made a move to another area late in the morning and it was here that Tino hooked into something large! In fact after a couple of minutes of drag screaming from the reel, I actually had to go after his fish. I knew it wasn’t a bass and figured that it was likely a musky. Eventually after about 5 minutes of fighting it on light tackle, I was able to get the head into the net and boga around the jaw. It was a great fish for 10 pound line and several pics were taken before releasing it back to the water.

We spent the remainder of the day jumping around looking for more fish and managed one really good smallie late in the afternoon. It was hard to fish the areas I wanted with boats seeming like they were in another tournament! Everyone was livewelling their fish too, making me think that there was another event going on.

We fished right up until 3:00 and headed back to the ramp soon after. This was definitely a tough day for fish but the ones we caught, were good ones. I know that once the water cleans up, everything will return back to normal and plenty more fish will be landed. Hopefully a couple of days will take care of it as I will be back soon. Better days ahead!

Quality Fall Bass

The last day for sturgeon fishing saw Darren & I heading out for bass. Neither of us really wanted to anchor up and wait to get bit, so we decided to go for smallmouth, in hopes of a few giants.

With bad weather on the way, all I could hope for was a delay in its arrival and the radar looked like it just might happen. We fished through the morning without any precipitation and pounded smallies one after the other. It was just like old times with no boats in sight!

The rain did finally catch up to us however and from noon until the time we left, it literally never stopped. Intermittent at times and heavy at others, we just kept catching bass! In fact we fished through it all and caught bass even in the worst! In the end however, we decided to call it a little early and quit before 3:00.

Today was one of those days when you were glad to be on the water. A lack of boat traffic made it relaxing to fish and despite the wet afternoon, very enjoyable. We may not have gotten into any monsters but plenty of quality fish were landed making this one of the best fall days of fishing yet!
