Asim & Richard joined me this morning for a half day of fishing, hoping to change their luck. They had fished a few times this season on their own without any success and wanted to catch something. It shouldn’t be a problem with how the fishing had been lately but we would have to wait and see!

Overnight the high heat and humidity had broken and we began with a cool morning for our run. The water temps had also fallen by 4 degrees and I wasn’t sure how this was going to affect the fish. Apparently it had, as it took quite a bit longer to locate some active biters. It was also difficult to find clean water with all the winds we had been receiving lately.

After what seemed like forever, the first reel finally went off and they landed a northern. The skunk was officially out of the boat! From this point on, the reels began firing frequently and many more fish came aboard. Both pike and several good walleye saw the net and pics were taken to give proof that they had actually caught something. After their last few outings from shore, they wanted photos!

Later on in the morning, I pulled the plug from trolling and headed somewhere that they could try for bass. Although it wasn’t on fire, they spent the last hour catching a few and added another walleye to the livewell for dinner.

Time passed by quickly and before we knew it, our morning trip was done. I packed everything up and we made our way back to the docks. Today may not have been what I was use to seeing but there were still plenty of fish landed on a half day trip. The water temp drop acted like a cold front to the fish and adjustments needed to be made to ensure that they would catch. All I know is that they finally had a successful day of fishing, for their first time this season. Many more to come too, I hope!!

Big Waves Big Bites

Jeff & his wife Alisa were with me this morning, for a half day of fishing. They were hoping to catch some pike and walleye and I knew just where to go. We hit the water in a big SW wind and had to make a long run to where we were starting. The smooth moves seats were definitely a comfort in the big, twisting waves!

I set up the lines once we arrived and began a troll, in search of some active fish. It didn’t take long for the first reel to fire and Jeff was into a heavy fish. Too bad we’ll never know what it was, as it bogged him down in the weeds and just came off. The second fish was for Alisa and at least she got to fight it, almost all the way to the boat. It too came off, just out of reach of the net. It was time for some payback!

After the fish got up on us, two to nothing, we rallied back with a beating they won’t soon forget. For the next few hours, reels were firing constantly and they were fighting one fish after the other. Both pike and walleye were coming aboard and plenty of pics were being taken. Some of the fish were quite large and several of the walleye were true giants for these waters. They were even fortunate enough to catch many smaller ones as well that fell in the slot. These would be on the menu, for their dinner tonight.

Time passed by quickly with this trip only a half day, but not before a few more fish were caught. I packed everything up after and strapped a few things down for the ride back. I knew it was going to be bumpy, but I also knew that we would stay dry.

Jeff & Alisa were excited before the trip began this morning, but even more excited when we were done. The numbers of quality fish landed in just 4 hours was well beyond their expectations. I was pretty sure when we began that we would have a great day, when I saw the winds and overcast skies. Lately the bite has been on fire and today’s conditions only made it better. I can only imagine how many fish would have been caught, had this been a full day of fishing. Great times were had by all and we have plenty of pics to prove it!!

Another 3 Generations

Today I had another outing, fishing with a family of 3 generations and they had a blast. John, Johnathon and Jake experienced great action, but this time it was mostly pike. Although they did catch several walleye, most of them had to be released because of their size. Only a couple of them went into the livewell, but the fishing was on fire. Unfortunately, so were the air temps and we had to raise the roof early in the morning, just for a little relief. Thankfully, we did have a good wind, which helped to some degree!

After trolling all morning, I decided to try for something a little bigger and managed to get them all a sturgeon. It damn near killed them, but it was worth it! They now had a big fish under their belt!

By afternoon, it was a real scorcher and I shifted gears once again in search of more walleye. I attempted to troll another section of the lake and it wasn’t long before a reel fired. Too bad it was a 23 incher and had to be released! I kept at it for a while longer but soon gave up due to all the floating vegetation. This grasslike weed is just unbearable! I was literally doing constant full rotations just to ensure the lines were kept clean!

Limited time remaining had me moving once again and I decided to try an area I hadn’t fished in quite a while. I also shifted to a dropshot and made several drifts over the rocks and multiple fish were missed and lost. They did manage to catch a few bass, but it should have been a lot more! There were also a few rigs lost as they weren’t familiar with this technique. Eventually we just ended the day and headed in.

Despite the high heat & humidity today, we stuck it out and fended quite well. They all slammed with multiple species landed and enjoyed spending time together. This was definitely a hot, but successful day of fishing!!

Two New Species

Mike & Kevin were in from New Hampshire and looking for a couple of new species of fish to catch. I mentioned pike & walleye and they were all over that! I told them that we would be trolling and covering water to get the bites. This also sounded good to them and we headed to our first area to fish.

I began where I had been catching the last few times out, but the bite was really slow. I thought that with the water levels rising lately that the fish might have repositioned and apparently, I was right. When I moved shallower, the reels began to fire. Both pike and walleye were now coming aboard and the numbers began to rise. The size also got better as Mike and Kevin both landed some really nice fish.

I covered plenty of water in search of the fish and found them in several areas during the morning. As they only had a half day booked, I needed to make sure we remained on fish. The high water seemed to have driven some of the bigger fish up shallow and a slight adjustment had them hooked up, often.

To say that this morning was productive would have been an understatement. Mike and Kevin boated plenty of fish in a short period of time and managed to tick off a couple of new species from their bucket lists. Great times were had by all!

A Lethargic Bite

Aurelien & his son Hector accompanied me today, all the way from Madrid. They were here on vacation and had 2 weeks scheduled locally. A passion for fishing led them to me and I didn’t want to disappoint. We began with a troll, after making a long run to our first spot. Conditions were flat calm and temps were already quite hot when I set the lines in search of pike & walleye. Hopefully, the fish would cooperate!

It didn’t tale too long to get into the first fish and Hector brought a good keeper to the net. His second fish also came in fast and we now had a couple of nice walleye in the livewell for them to dine on tonight. Not long after, his third walleye had other ideas and came off on the way to the boat. Too bad too, as this was one worthy of a photo!

We spent several hours covering water and I was seeing a pattern with the fish, as more of them were being lost or falling off in the net. Pike and walleye were coming unpinned and this was very strange. The fish just weren’t very active! Eventually after the third walleye hit the box, we decided to switch to another species, but not before Aurelien finally landed a big enough walleye for a pic. They had caught both pike and walleye but I believe more fish were lost than landed!

Bass was the next targeted species and they managed to catch several in the first area we hit. We even added another good walleye to the tank for a total of 4 for them to take home. I moved around a couple of times and both Hector & his father enjoyed catching plenty of bass from each spot before we were done.

As this was just the start of their vacation, they will be doing more fishing on their own from Kayaks. The place they are staying had a couple of them and they are right on the water. Hopefully they will get into more fish on their vacation and learn from some of the techniques they used today. I’m sure they will have a great two weeks here in Montreal chasing  Canadian fish!!
