A Miserable Wet One

Back on the water this morning with Lloyd & Dave in absolutely miserable weather! We may have launched dry but it didn’t last as we soon found out. It practically rained the entire time we fished and the big NE winds didn’t help either. The fish seemed to have moved deeper and they definitely didn’t want to eat very well. I trolled for quite a while over both bait and good marks before finally having the first reel fire. After that, I concentrated on the areas that produced best and managed to put plenty more fish in the boat. Both pike and walleye were landed by Lloyd & Dave and they ended up having a great time, despite the conditions. At least we had a few brief periods where the rain let up! We definitely grinded it out today, for sure!!

First Time Smallmouth

Kris had never caught a smallmouth before, so I told him that we would focus on them today. Being from Texas, largemouth were the bass he was used to, so catching a few smallies would be a real treat. Seeing as how bass had opened just yesterday, he was definitely in luck!

The lake was a mirror and there was a thick haze where we started. Fortunately, the fish didn’t care as Kris boated several brownies from the area, we were fishing. I’m not sure what he was more impressed with, the clarity of the water or their fight!

With each move we made, there were more fish landed and on one of the spots, he somehow managed to hook a sturgeon with a crankbait! We saw the lure in the mouth area but I don’t know if it actually ate. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to land it after a lengthy 20-minute battle, so I guess we’ll never know! Eventually it went to deep water and just pulled off. I think Kris was happy that it was over too!

The haze stayed with us all day and I actually think it was due to all the forest fires. It wasn’t a usual humidity haze that I was used to seeing. It made visibility everywhere, very difficult. Even seeing into the water was harder than usual. One of the areas we were fishing had bass shallow and trying to sight them to cast to wasn’t easy. Thankfully Kris had a great pair of sunglasses on and managed to land plenty more fish from here.

The time flew by today with only one person in the boat. He benefitted from this as well, by catching all the fish! He will go home with a great respect for the smallmouth and I’m sure it won’t be his last time fishing for them. Tough but very rewarding day!!

Cold Water Bite

The last couple of days saw high numbers of pike and walleye landed without any reports. Today however, Dominic & his son Justin were with me for a bit of a struggle. It started out slow in 58-degree water temps with only a few fish and I had to move around plenty to find the active ones. Although it was a grind at times, we were able to pick at them pretty good. Justin was loading the livewell with keeper walleye while his father seemed to only be able to catch the larger ones. One area produced best in the afternoon and it was here that most of the damage was done. Overall, it was a great day once again and they even took fresh fish home with them for dinner tonight!

A Great Present

Tylor treated his father Mark to a day on the water for a birthday/Father’s Day/ Christmas gift and what a day they had! It took less than 3 minutes to hook up, but that was a decoy fish! We spent a bit longer searching for the second one. I covered plenty of water, both deep & shallow and managed to scratch at them before finally hitting an area that had more active fish. Both walleye & northerns came in and they even had a few double headers too! Water temps were as low as 61 degrees but the fish were biting!

Sometime after noon I decided to change locations as there was literally zero wind and those damn dog pecker knats were just insane. It felt good to get some air circulating! We went to another spot further away after hammering on the fish and I wondered if it was the right move. Water temps reached as high as 75 degrees here and I covered plenty of water looking for bites. Although there weren’t as many fish landed, they still managed to get several more pike and a few walleye for their efforts. It got so hot that I even had to raise the roof for the first time this season! At least we were somewhat comfortable in the shade, while trolling this afternoon!

With thunder storms brewing, we decided to call it quits around 2:30, when we began to hear thunder. I quickly packed everything up and headed back to the ramp to take out. Despite the slightly shorter than usual time out, there were still loads of fish landed. Overall, it was a great day on the water and Mark really enjoyed his gift. Tylor did as well as he tagged along for the day and benefitted from the tremendous present to his dad. The gift that keeps on giving!

Ben joined me this morning for a half day of fishing, with a couple of his friends. Although the bite was tough at first, we did manage a bunch of fish. Most were clones so very few pics were taken! With water temps climbing, it will only get better!
