Hot & Humid

Steven and his son Nathan had a great day filled with plenty of fish. They caught walleye, bass, pike and an elusive drum on dropshot before we switched exclusively to bass. Soft plastics were used for the rest of the day and they pounded on the smallmouth. Nathan even managed a big walleye but we released it quickly due to a deep hooking. Today was a real scorcher with sunshine and zero wind and hydrating was necessary in the high humidity. The best part of the day was probably the run back to the dock as this was the coolest we were all day!

A Novice Day

Norman and his son Daniel fished with me this morning and boated a bunch of walleye and bass. The bite was slow, but they were able to get into the fish by slowing down with a dropshot. Neither of them had much experience fishing before and fended quite well.

My afternoon party of two were quite similar in experience and we repeated the process with a dropshot technique. Tim picked up a couple of fish right away but his friend wasn’t as lucky. It took a little longer for him to get in the game. We moved around a bit, it but it was one area that we focussed most of our time drifting. Although it was loaded with fish it was also loaded with floating weeds and this made it difficult to get bit. They spent most of the time cleaning their lines!

Overall today was a good day, but between all the boat traffic and tough fishing conditions, it was a little slow. The full moon is behind us now and the fishing should improve. Warming temps will have the fish more active this week, or so I hope! They are finally beginning to move to their summer locations and a mix of deep & shallow fish should be had. Even better days to come!

Another Slam of a Day

Russell & his wife Rachel joined me today for a mix of everything. Although we were focussed on bass and walleye, there was always a chance of something bigger. Rachel proved that with a nice sized northern caught on a drop shot rig. She also managed to land the largest walleye and bass as well giving her a great slam for the day. Both Rachel and Russell landed plenty of walleye and bass and were able to take a good limit of Walters back with them in the end. All in all a pretty good day!

Full Moon Drop Shot

Deb, Maria & Dylan never expected a fishing day like they had today! They caught all kinds of fish drop shotting, both small and large, in almost perfect conditions. We had a great wind to be able to drift over the shoal we were on and the fish were everywhere! Although it took Dylan a little longer than both Deb & his mother Maria, he finally mastered this technique. By slowing down, he was finally able to hook more fish than he missed and landed both walleye and smallmouth bass. Maria and Deb were into the fish almost immediately and by reacting slower on the hookset, they were able to lock up most of the time.

We wanted to try a troll but the fish kept us dropshotting until almost noon. Once the wind layed down we shifted gears and headed to another area on the water to give it a try. Too bad it wasn’t as good as the finesse fishing, but we did manage to land a few. The fish just weren’t chasing and I realized this by the way they were hooked. Not one was in the mouth! They were slamming the lures and getting fouled somewhere near but not from the inside. I hate when they hit closed mouthed! We had several rips as well that just weren’t there! I made another move to somewhere else near the end, hoping for better results, but was equally disappointed. A few more rips but only one fish for our effort was seen from here before we headed in.

Slow presentations were definitely needed today and the drop shot technique was the answer. All three of them had high numbers landed and plenty more chances as well. I’m sure glad I decided to fish this way today as the slow drift was definitely the way to go! Great results were had on the full moon today!

Going For Gold & Bronze

Val was with me again today and we headed out for walleye to start the trip. He always likes to bring a few home to eat and I knew exactly where to get them! The winds were blowing pretty good but less than yesterday and I was sure we wouldn’t have a hard time catching fish.

The drifts were absolutely perfect and we remained in the area for several passes. Each one yielded both bass and walleye and several of the Walters made their way into the livewell. A few others were overs and some smaller ones too that were released!

We ran around the lake afterwards and hit plenty of spots catching both bass and walleye again. Most of the fish were a little deeper today but Val did manage to nail several smallies in the shallows as well. Only one fish pic was taken as Val would rather fish than take photos!

Overall it was an interesting day with the winds big then non-existent then big again! It was a roller coaster ride for sure! Plenty of fish were caught and he was able to take a good limit of tasty treats back with him in the end. Who could ask for anything more!
