Three Generations This Morning

July 1st 2019

Yesterday’s weather cancellation had me back out this morning with three generations of fishermen. Jarrett had his son Jayden & his father Tony along for some smallmouth action. Although we got into several fish on our first spot, they were rather small in size. In fact more were lost tan landed when they just came unpinned!

We tried a few other areas afterwards, without much success and finally switched presentations completely. I even had them dropshot a spot, but soon pulled the plug on this as well and headed elsewhere!

The last stop had the best success with numbers of smallies being caught on a couple of presentations. I don’t think it was a location thing, but rather timing. The sun had been out all morning and warmed the water, triggering the bass to bite. By slowing down the speed of the retrieve, we were able to put many more fish in the boat and ended on a high. In fact, Jarrett landed the largest bass of the day on his last cast! I had stretched it out a bit due to the bite and finally called it just before noon!

Personal Bests

What a great third day for Neville! He not only managed to get his personal best smallie on a fly, but he even broke it soon after with another one even bigger! Despite the wind causing havoc with the casting, he kept on the fly and was rewarded with some real beauties!

Too bad he had to go back home to England as I’m sure he would have preferred to remain in Canada and hunt for the giant smallies another day!

Another Mixed Bag

Day two was a better day for Neville with the fly rod! Although it took several fly changes to get the first one, it was well worth the wait. Largemouth were a little finicky from the get go, barely nipping the flies. Each time he set on the fish, they just let go. He practically had to dead stick the presentations in order to finally get them to bite!

Once we were finished with the green bass, we ventured offshore and managed to get him some nice smallies. Winds didn’t make it easy but he got it done! Great day two and looking forward to day three!

Bass on The Fly

June 26th 2019

Neville was back again this year for another three day fishing trip. Being from the UK, he really wanted to catch bass and on the fly! I aimed to make it happen!

Every spot we stopped on held fish and despite catching a number of them, most were rather on the small side. He did however manage to get several good ones, making for a great day!

A Reel-Wet One

June 25th 2019

Nick & Richard sure picked a winner today! It literally poured rain, for the entire day. Fortunately we were able to make the morning run in only a big wind but it began shortly after we were set up.

Despite the miserable conditions, they both managed to get into plenty of fish. Some great walleye were also landed but the best one was lost at the boat. Somehow while Rick was fighting the fish it managed to surge and right into the kicker she went. It also took another line with it as well as a couple of lures. Not the best way to end the day but crap happens!
