Sturgeon & Eyes

A double trip today saw Marco, Rogerio and Mario in the morning, searching for a sturgeon bite. They were from Brazil and looking to catch something big. They weren’t disappointed!

Winds were finally out of the SW and light making anchoring up much easier. We fished until close to 11:00 and everyone caught big fish. Not the giants I would have liked, but still big to them. They even had a double header that was a little chaotic to land. A great morning of fishing!

My afternoon trip was with Ken and his brother Rob and their father Denis. We were heading out for walleye as their dad hadn’t caught one in quite a while. I knew it wouldn’t be a problem and began almost immediately. Several drifts over rocky areas produced plenty of bites, but most of them were missed. Striking too fast didn’t allow the fish to get hooked, but they still managed to put a couple of keepers in the box. Time to change locations!

I ventured offshore to an area that was holding some better fish and made several drifts over this area. It was here that they all managed to land a few more walleye. Denis was the one on fire, capturing two good overs and a couple of high-end keepers. Both Rob and Ken also contributed to their catch and Ken boated a big northern as well. We remained here until it was time to leave and they weren’t disappointed. We had accomplished what we had set out to do!

Today was an interesting one filled with a mix of fish. Both targeted species were caught and that’s all that counts. Everyone had a great time, leaving satisfied and the afternoon guys would be eating fresh fish tonight!!

Family Day Two

The second day with Herm and his sons Greg & Todd, began with walleye. We spent a few hours over them and managed to put several in the box. The fish may not have been biting well, but a few of them managed to get on the line.

After we were done with the walleye, they decided to try for more sturgeon again. I found them pretty quickly and Herm was locked up fast. In fact, he managed to land the first three before his sons ever hooked up. This all changed however and they soon got in the game, and began fighting fish. We remained here for a few hours before changing it up again. We made a last stop before calling it a day and managed to get only one more walleye for them to take home. The bite was definitely not on for these fish today!

The expected winds for the afternoon never really happened and we spent the entire day in fishable waters. Although it was from the wrong direction for a drift, at least it wasn’t rolling! Regardless, the fishing was great both days! They all had a chance to spend time together and caught plenty of fish in the process. Great times were had by everyone!!

Sturgeon & Bass

Herm & his sons, Todd & Greg were here for 2 days and looking to get into all kinds of fish. I told them about the sturgeon bite from yesterday and they were all in. Hopefully it would be as good as the short time we spent on them yesterday!

I began idling over the general area and it took only a few minutes to find what I was looking for. I quickly set up the lines and it was game on. We never really moved from this one area and they landed several decent fish throughout the morning.

The afternoon was spent fishing for bass and Herm schooled his sons on these fish. Although they did all catch smallies, it was definitely Herm that fended better than the rest. By 3:00 we were done and headed back, after a quick stop for walleye. We would be trying for them in the morning and I just wanted to see what we were in for.

Today was a great day filled with plenty of action and some pretty good-sized fish. Although not the giants I would have liked, they were still fun to fight. Hopefully tomorrow will be equally as good, but the wind may have something to do with the outcome. A big SE is expected for the afternoon and that may affect the fishing. Crossing my fingers for smooth waters!!

An Eerie Morning

Olivia and Mike were with me this morning, hoping to catch sturgeon. Although the bite had been difficult lately, I was going to try and hook them up. Between all the NE winds we had been having lately and the heavy fog banks, it wasn’t easy. Today would be no different!

We carefully made our way out in this dense air and began the search for sturgeon. I covered plenty of water and hit several good areas, with only one walleye to show for our efforts. This wasn’t looking too good!

As the time drew near to the end, I finally stumbled on an area holding some fish. What was suppose to be the last 30 minutes of their trip turned into over an hour. I couldn’t leave with the fish biting! They both fought and landed several decent sturgeon in the remaining time along with another good walleye, that joined the other one from earlier this morning. Oh yeah, Mike also caught an eel that was unhooked at boatside.

This day may have started off slowly, but in the end it all worked out. In just a short time there were several sturgeon landed and we went out with a bang. I guess you could say that I pulled a “Hail Mary” today!

Baby Sturgeon Firsts

Another attempt at sturgeon fishing didn’t go unanswered for the gang today. Despite fighting a big NE wind, we were able to land 3 small fish. Brayden & Holden wanted to catch their very first sturgeon and we tried several places to get it done. Their father’s, Kevin & Thierry were happy to see it all come together, despite the smaller than usual size of their catch. Hopefully the next time out, there will be a few more pounds added to the fish!
