All Smiles on Deck

Josh and his son Benjamin fished with me this morning, on not so calm waters. Running to our first location was a little bumpy to say the least! Although the fishing was a bit slower than I had hoped for, we did manage to land many pike in the short time we were out. Well, Ben did most of the landing as his dad let him reel in almost all the fish! He even managed to boat his very first walleye ever that they planned on having for dinner. All in all a good but short day!

Cold Water Adjustments

Michele, Alex and Dwayne were with me today, eager to catch a few fish. What they didn’t know was that it was going to be the best day of fishing, they had ever experienced!

Michele & Alex started the trip without Dwayne, but he was scheduled to join them before noon. More fish for them I guess! With just the three of us, we ran to our first spot and I dropped the rods in for a little troll.

We had covered plenty of water with only one walleye to show for our efforts and even that fish didn’t make the reel fire! I had done a check and noticed it pinned to the hooks, so Michele got to land the first fish of the day before I made a few drastic location changes. From this point on, it was lights out for the fish!

Both Michel & Alex spent the next several hours landing fish after fish. A mix of walleye & pike were boated every few minutes and they even had several doubles in the mix! Too bad it had to all come to an end as we headed back to the ramp to pick up Dwayne before 11:30.

A quick bathroom break and a turnaround saw us racing across nearly flat calm waters to return to where we had left off. Would they still be there and would they still be biting? This was the question!

I had decided to try an adjacent area in hopes of more active fish and it didn’t take long. A couple of minutes after setting the lines, we had a reel fire and Dwayne was tight to a good pike. Unfortunately the second reel took a lot longer to go off and disappointment was had, because so did the fish! In fact the next couple of bites all came off before we could get them into the net. These fish were short striking the lures with the cold water and a reduction of speed was needed to even get them somewhat interested.

After struggling for over an hour with inactive fish, I decided to try something different and their luck really changed. From this point on, I managed to get them into plenty more fish. We had a couple of double headers and many, many singles. A small change in presentations was all that was required to fire the fish up! The afternoon turned out to be almost as good as the morning as the time passed by. They were even able to add a few more walleye to the tank giving them a good limit to bring home. As always, several overs were returned too!

Today turned out to be a success by making a few adjustments. With the water temps much colder than I’d like, slowing down allowed the fish to move on the baits much better. Location changes were also needed as the fish weren’t everywhere like they should be at this time of year. In the end, the day was a success! Everyone had a great time and for once, the weather was perfect as well. None of us could have asked for anything more!

More Cold North Winds

Sam and his son Sam junior were joined by his dad today, for a shorter than usual outing. We began late and ended early! We were trolling before 9:30 and the cold front conditions had the fish in a lock down mood. I had to cover plenty of water in order to get the bites we did! The only two walleye bites we had both came off, not long after the hook up. In the end, Sam junior fought all of the fish and managed double digits in pike. When will the water warm up?

Major Cold Front

Yesterday’s heat wave and hurricane like winds had me postponing the day! Unfortunately today wasn’t much better with a major cold front and big north winds. Young, Cindy & Rob experienced a tougher than usual bite but they did managed to get into a bunch of good northerns. The walleye unfortunately were either over, or under! One giant perch and a smallie to end the day and we were done! I can’t wait for the weather to warm back up so the water can also do the same. These fish don’t know if they are coming or going!

Making Multiple Adjustments

Sveinn & his wife Valdis were with me today, and all the way from Iceland! They are in Montreal for 3 years working for a company and loving the Canadian life. They had even joined me this winter on the ice and had a great time. I was sure today would be even better!

With last night’s cold front the water temps definitely dropped and an adjustment was needed to make the fish bite. I didn’t have the lines set for more than a few minutes before a reel fired and Valdis was into her very first walleye. I knew it was an over long before it even neared the boat. She was just elated with the fact that she had even caught a fish! Little did she know that it was just beginning!

We had spent a few hours covering water in the first location and after several adjustments, managed to put 3 keeper eyes in the livewell. Time for our first move!

I decided to change up presentations and try for another species. The first reel to fire went off hard and I knew Sveinn was about to land his first Canadian Northern! After several more, I decided to break out the fly rod as he had requested before the trip. This too didn’t take long before he was battling one on the fly. Along with the pike there were also more walleye and life was good!

Late in the afternoon, I made another move and hit what turned out to be the last stop of our day. By finding warmer water we were able to continue the great fishing, boating more walleye and northerns. Some of them were really good ones too, closing out a perfect day!

Sveinn & his wife Valdis spent an absolutely spectacular day on the water with almost perfect conditions. Loads of fish were landed and a few were even harvested for their dinner. It would be the first time they ever tried walleye and I know they will love it!

The next couple of days look like a wash with the giant winds expected, so I will be taking them off to do some work around the house. I will however be out towards the end of the week and back at it hard!  Too many fish out there and plenty of clients to enjoy catching them in the weeks to come! Several open dates are still available as well for anyone to experience some of the best fishing they’ve ever had! I can’t wait to get back out!
